Challenges in Song of Solomon
The most challenging part of this book for me is how Toni Morrison doesn’t make it totally clear what is going on in the book. This happens many times as Toni transitions without context. On page 126 this is what I felt when I was reading. I think that this page was particularly confusing as Ruth just starts talking about how she did not hurt Milkman on her knees. This could have many meanings but nothing is clear. I think that it definitely has to do with the religious ties in the book.
One thing that I do to help get around this confusion is to just read past it to get some context and then go back and reread. On page 126, I got very confused when Ruth started talking to Milkman about how she didn’t do any harm on her knees. She also talks about how she nursed Milkman for too long. Reading past all of this got to where the page starts to make more sense, and I was not as confused.

OK, but can you give an example of how reading ahead for context actually helped you?
